Additional Opportunities to Learn with Heidi
These on-demand resources are available to you now:
Quilting as therapy is a common concept in the quilting world, and quilting can help heal sadness and grief in many forms. In this lecture Heidi will discuss quilts made about the pandemic, the passing of her father, and the impact of the quilts that were part of her own childhood. Heidi will also discuss the concept of reframing, and the way that storytelling in a quilt can help to give a new perspective on things, and help aid in the healing of emotions and the building of courage, compassion, and self esteem.
This lecture will be sent to you as a 4-page PDF. The PDF contains a link to an unlisted YouTube video where you can watch the 50-minute lecture. The PDF also contains all of the text from the lecture, and many links for additional learning connected to the lecture.

How can we observe our habits? When we see them clearly, how do we create change? This lecture will investigate habits around creativity, bodily movements, diversity & inclusion, and more. This subject will be approached with humility, as a person attempting to see and adjust their own habits. It is offered with background knowledge in hand quilting, art education, and yoga therapy. This lecture will not tell you which habits are good or bad, but will instead pose questions for self-reflection so that you might be better able to see and understand your own habits. Then, it will offer specific and practical techniques for creating change. This change can help to break through limiting beliefs, and can help in areas where willpower is not enough.
This lecture will be sent to you as a 5-page PDF. The PDF contains a link to an unlisted YouTube video where you can watch the 46-minute lecture. The PDF also contains all of the text from the lecture, and many links for additional learning connected to the lecture.
There are many positive reviews for this lecture on my instagram post from 2/18/2021:
“I loved the lecture Heidi. I’ve been thinking about Habits all day and really appreciate how you managed to bring urgency to the quilting demographic attending the conference in such a good gentle way, without scolding or judgement. You used your own experience to remind us how to be intentional about this hard subject and to demonstrate how you’ve applied it to your own life. That kind of vulnerability takes guts! The lessons were really valuable and thought provoking. I will definitely quilt AND create with more intention after listening.”
”Thank you, I enjoyed the talk. I appreciated seeing your messy work space. I always feel ashamed of mine but realize I should be grateful for it and make the best of it”
“I absolutely loved your Habits lecture Heidi! I watched it live and want to go back and listen again. There was so much goodness in it. Of course the habit snuggling was a key take away. Also how limiting or negative thoughts can be a habit. I loved your reframe about your messy workspace being a part of the creative process. So true! One of the most profound takeaways was your sharing the conversation you had with Chawne Kimber about how we can change the habit of using the white American language/ assumptions/ perspective when describing quilts and quilt techniques. That was eye opening and so helpful. Quilts are quilts. ❤️”
“Yes - I love the term “Habit Snuggling”! It makes sense to link a new habit next to an existing habit. I will actively look for ways to use this concept. I really enjoyed the lecture and am already using the resources!”
“I loved your lecture. Your presence is so calming, I am definitely going to be looking into hand yoga, and I loved how you related the topics back to you life examples.”

Scrap Quilts:
I love sewing scrap quilts! They give me an instant feeling of collaboration as I work with the supplies that I have at hand. I like to sew them by hand AND with a sewing machine, and I will share techniques for both in class. If you don’t have a sewing machine, you will be very successful in class without it, but you may also be inspired to get a sewing machine… My machine is a free hand-me-down Singer, and it works just fine. I’ll bet you can find a free old machine if you ask around too!
I like working with monochromatic and subtle colors, but these techniques will work with any color palette, and I talk through variables like color with students in class. Students will learn a ‘vignettes piecing’ method, so that the quilt can be made entirely with scraps. The class will focus on constructing a quilt top, and will not cover basting, quilting, or binding. (See my free YouTube basting video below)
Key concepts of the class include:
Composition and aesthetics
Getting it to lay flat
Piecing irregular bits of fabric to each other
Avoiding split seams
Avoiding making more scraps
Working with the problems created by your scraps (not against them)
Fast and efficient machine and hand piecing techniques
Tips for working with the supplies that you already own
Tips for body care and lifestyle so that you can fully enjoy scrap quilting
We’ll celebrate the environmentally friendly and ethical aspects of this work
This is a pre-recorded class. You will have access to 6 very short technique videos for knots and stitches, followed by a 100-minute lecture on scrap quilting with many embedded videos that I break down in detail. Then, you will experience a recording of a live Zoom class with student questions and progress, a powerpoint, and lots of live demos. The class is 3 hours, followed by an hour of mingling with students and answering follow up questions. You will have an opportunity to share your work with students-only in a google slideshow, and you can share publicly with #hpscraps on Instagram.

Improv Hand Quilting:
Hand quilting is my favorite part of making a quilt! This workshop is both conceptual and technical. I begin with a Powerpoint lecture, during which I explain both why and how I quilted as I did. Stitch density, exposed or hidden knots, overlapping lines of quilting, and color choices will be expanded upon. I love to quilt with pearl size 8 thread for its high visibility and strength. Students can work with an existing quilt top or a ‘wholecloth’ single piece of fabric. We cover basting, quilting with a tabletop and a heavy book to create tension, hand positioning, hand care, thimble use, and a variety of ways to balance planning with improv. I don't use pens to ‘mark,’ my fabric, but will share a few tricks to anticipate my stitching. I love to create areas of visual interest to activate the quilt top with the quilting functioning like a ‘drawing’ on the surface of the fabric. Students will not complete their quilt during the class, but they will get a solid foundation to start! See and share work with #hpHandQuilting.
Key concepts of the class include:
Thimble use
Hand quilting techniques
Composition and aesthetics
Tips on being fast and efficient
Knots, both buried and exposed
Balancing planning with improvisation
Tips for quilting over/around applique and embroidery
Tips on supplies like needles, thread, thimbles, and fabric
Tips for body care and lifestyle so that you can fully enjoy hand quilting
Creating visual tension with our quilting to make even the most homely quilt top sing!
This class consists of:
5 short intro videos on techniques
A zine on hand quilting
A two-hour intro lecture where I share lots of details about my quilts
A 4.5 hour recording of a live Zoom class where students ask wonderful questions and we dig into the details of composition, technique, and more
A BONUS video of me hand quilting a quilt for about an hour, so that you can see this process up close and in real time
Lots of links to my best YouTube videos on quilting
A private community slideshow that will link you to the other students so you can share your work with our group, and reach out to each other via email or instagram.
This workshop is Beginner Friendly, and also very exciting to experienced quilters who are eager to try something new, and increase their efficiency & body-care.

This is a very special offering. You and I will focus on a topic of your choice for an hour. I’ll offer my expertise as a maker, artist, teacher, influencer, yoga therapist, and savvy business woman.
These consults are appropriate for beginners and advanced creators. Some folks choose to make a routine meeting every-other week, monthly, quarterly, or yearly. For others, intermittent pacing when a project comes up organically is ideal. There is also no requirement to commit to a longer structure, and I’ve met just once with many people and we accomplished a lot in our hour.
We can discuss:
-hand quilting techniques, craftsmanship, style choices
-hand or machine piecing
-quilt ideas
-hand mending techniques in general, or for a specific garment
-clothing alteration
-creative career approaches
-photography, exhibitions, artist statements
-hand and body care (I’m a certified yoga therapist)
-see something that I do, that you’d like to know more about? Let’s talk!
*While there are many things that we can talk about in a hour, please realize that the session is limited to an hour, and some projects will take more time than that. Be sure to prioritize topics when booking a session, so that we can tackle them while honoring our time window. ❤️
In-Person Options:
Generally, these consultations will take place over Zoom, but it is also possible to meet at my home studio in Milwaukee, WI. Please share your preference in the Intake Form. *If you need a specific date, please email me in advance for availability first.
1 hour, $250
3 hours $500: we can focus together for an afternoon or evening
6 hours, $1,000: book a class for you and/or your small group in my studio
You are welcome to record your time with me and keep it for personal reference.
If you would like to share your consultation time with a friend, you are welcome to join me as a pair. Please share that in the Intake Form
