Hand Appliqué Sampler Quilt:

Large scale and teeny-tiny freeform appliqué is a technique that I love incorporating in my quilts. This sampler class and pattern introduces you to 24 special techniques. You may be familiar with a couple of these from various other classes with me, but this class contains them all, in one place, with an easy-to-follow pattern guiding the composition so that you are free to focus on mastering each technique as it comes.

Unique & Flexible Pattern:

• This is my first “real” pattern in that you can make an exact replica if you would like to! There are clear directions on printing about 50 pages of US letter or A4 paper to create a template. (There’s also a JPEG that can be projected onto your base fabric and traced for an exact replica)

• OR, I have an image of the quilt top with a 1” grid superimposed on it, so that you can easily estimate placement for your own “approximate” version of this 61 × 61” quilt top. (Personally, I think this is the most fun option)

• OR, just enjoy learning the techniques as you place them wherever you’d like with your own composition!

• If it looks a bit sparse to your eye, you can absolutely add lots more shapes once you finish the first 24-steps of this pattern! As a “sampler,” each step is intended to add to add a skill to your sewing vocabulary.

Class Highlights Include:

1. Learn a variety of techniques: I teach both “innie” and “outie” corners, large shapes, tiny applique, curves, straight lines, and multiple stitches to make your hand work more or less visible.

2. Beginner Friendly: Instruction begins with learning to thread a needle, and I share the how’s and why’s for all the important steps afterwards.

3. See me create the composition: The recorded demonstrations in class are of me sewing the quilt top. You’ll get to see the composition grow, and note my surprise as the shapes, colors, and personality of this quilt emerge. Experiencing this improvisational approach to appliqué will give you more confidence while making your next quilt, so you can stay curious as you sew!

4. Two cute pugs: I make my quilts in my home studio, and you’ll see me standing on my couch for a good view, laying things out on the carpet, and when on the floor, two little pugs will scamper over to sit on the quilt, if you have pets too, you’ll know what I mean! This real-world quilting shows you how to say YES to the space and time that you have access to. ❤️🐾

5. Filmed in 4k: Enjoy high quality video with access to 2x’s speed, slow motion, and captions.

  • September Quilt-Along! With the launch of this pattern, you’re encouraged to share your progress on the social media platform of your choice.

  • 25 videos on technique: ranging from 2-minutes to 30-minutes, and averaging 14-minutes each.

  • I like to prepare and pin a bunch of shapes and then watch an episode of TV while sewing everything in place. There are 3 recorded sessions of accumulated sewing like this, and they are entirely optional.

  • I estimate that you can hand-sew your quilt top in 9-20 hours, then you can move on to quilting! This class includes 2-hours of bonus content on hand quilting.
